Texarkana ISD recognizes that all students are special and each deserves the opportunity to succeed.
The District offers a
wide array of special programs designed to meet the diverse needs and provide exceptional educational opportunities for all students.
Character First
A community-wide program designed to instill positive character traits in students. This initiative to teach and reward good
character traits was launched in the fall of 2000. The program was developed jointly by the Texarkana Chamber of
Commerce Business Education Coalition, Texarkana ISD, and other participating school districts.

Arts XL
A program integrating the arts into the regular curriculum district-wide.Instruction in and through the arts has been proven to be one of the foundations of school reform
that can and will lead to educational excellence for all students. The ultimate goal of the ArtsXL initiative in
TISD is to transform the learning environment in every TISD classroom to a place where every student, regardless of
socio economic status, will be able to experience success in a culturally rich educational setting.

Tiger Health Clinic
A health clinic meeting the health care needs of TISD students and
their siblings. Through a grant from the Texas Department of Health in 2001, TISD is able to operate a health
clinic on the Texas Middle School campusto serve the needs of all district students. The goal of the school health
clinic is to improve the overall physical and emotional health of children and adolescents within the school and
community and to reduce some of the present barriers to learning.

Tiger Learning Center
Day care centers operated on select campuses that provide before and after school care to elementary school children and infant care to children
of teen parents. Child care is currently being offered at Spring Lake Park, Nash, and Wake Village Elementary
Schools. The Texas High Child Development Center offers infant care for children of teen parents and also serves
as a learning lab for students.

OPTIONS
An Academic Alternative Program for high school students. This program was developed in the fall of 1999 to help the non-traditionalstudent complete the high school
curriculum and provide an opportunity for students to accelerate and complete coursework to return to the high
school on grade level. A self paced curriculum is used and instructors are available to tutor students as
needed.

Gifted & Talented
E.P.I.C. – Educational Program for the Intellectually Creative. TISD
provides the E.P.I.C. program to encourage the more advanced students to enhance their skills in learning,
thinking, research, and communication through the development of innovative products and performances that reflect
individuality and creativity.

Pre-School
Pre-kindergarten classes are offered at all elementary schools for
eligible students age 3 or 4 by September 1. Full-day pre-kindergarten programs are offered at Fifteenth Street
Early Literacy Center and at Westlawn Elementary School. Half-day programs are offered at other campuses.

Spanish Language Instruction
Daily language instruction in Spanish is offered to elementary students beginning in the pre-kindergarten program. This program
initiated in the fall 2000 for all pre-k and kindergarten students now includes students in pre-k to 2nd grade.
This program is scheduled to add one grade level each year until all elementary grades are included.

Ninth Grade Center
A school within a school concept designed to transition students into
Texas High School. This initiative started in 1999 to improve the success and retention of all students entering
Texas High. The program is based around academic teaming which allows administrators and teachers better
opportunities to monitor student progress and success.

Special Education
Programs designed to meet the needs of students with disabilities. More

Tiger Vision
An innovative broadcast journalism program for high school students.
A new state-of-the-art production studio fully equipped with the latest in digital technology was installed
recently at Texas High School. Students can begin studying broadcast journalism in the expanded programs at Texas
Middle School.

Career & Technology
Over 80 courses offered at Texas High School give students an opportunity
for career exploration. CATE offerings include the aviation academy, teacher academy, CISCO academy, health
science technology, and many others. The Texas High School Program of Studies and Course Description Guide will
assist students in planning their four-year academic career and begin investigating post-high school opportunities.

Advanced Placement Courses
Texas High School offers advanced placement courses in the
following areas: English, Fine Arts, Foreign Language, Math, Science, and Social Studies. Students taking these
courses may earn college credit by successfully passing the advanced placement tests offered by the college
board in the spring each year. To prepare students for the rigorous advanced placement courses, the district has in
place a Pre-AP program of courses beginning in middle school.

Concurrent Enrollment Courses
High school students can enroll in
college-level courses and earn high school credit as well as college credit for their studies. Most courses are
offered on the Texas High campus. Concurrent enrollment courses are currently offered in English, Algebra,
Biology, Chemistry, U.S. History, and Government. See the Texas High School Program of Studies for a complete
