Substitute teaching is flexible part time employment that can provide you with an income that works with your schedule. Being a substitute teacher also provides a much needed service for the students and teachers of the district. The goal is to continue classroom instruction in the absence of the teacher.
Substitute teacher applicants are able to decide what days of the week they want to work, as well as the TISD campuses they want to work at. TISD utilizes an automated system, AESOP, to secure substitutes for teacher vacancies. AESOP communicates with substitute teachers about available assignments by telephone, email, and internet website. Approximately 50% of all assignments are scheduled with at least two days advance notice.
The following steps must be completed prior to becoming a Substitute Teacher:
Application In order to be considered for employment as a substitute teacher in Texarkana ISD you must complete a Substitute Teaching Application. You will also need to provide a copy of high school or college transcripts. Your application remains on file for one year.
Interview Substitute teacher interviews begin at the start of each school year and continue until the substitute list is full. Preference is given to certified teachers. The purpose of the interview is to assess readiness for substitute teaching and campus availability. Substitute interviews are conducted by the Human Resources Office.
Training Substitute Teacher training sessions are scheduled throughout the school year as the need for Substitute Teachers increases. Only applicants who have been interviewed and selected for training are invited to attend. This training provides valuable information on district procedures, legal information, and classroom management. For more information, please see the Substitute Teacher Handbook.
Criminal History A criminal history authorization form is completed as part of the application process. A background check will be conducted and must be received clear prior to employment. Applicants for employment with TISD may be subject to a fingerprint background check.
References Reference forms will be sent to the two references listed on your application when an interview is scheduled. They must be received and rated satisfactory before employment can begin.
Employment Upon successfully completing an interview, training, criminal history check, and reference check, substitute teacher applicants complete employment paperwork in the Human Resources Office. Required documents to be submitted with employment paperwork include Social Security Card (or birth certificate), Driver’s License (or state issued photo ID), high school or college transcripts, and voided check (if choosing direct deposit). Upon completion of documents for employee file, applicants receive an employee ID number and photo ID badge and are ready to accept substitute assignments.
