TISD's Shannon Kirkland Named Instructional Technology Specialist of the Year by Texas Computer Education Association
Texarkana, TX – Shannon Kirkland, Elementary Instructional Technology Specialist for Texarkana Independent School District, has been named the Texas Instructional Technology Specialist of the Year by the Texas Computer Education Association (TCEA).
From a field of over 1,300 specialists within the state, Kirkland was chosen for the Top 16 and then moved forward to the Final 3. During the TCEA Awards Reception held last night, she was honored with the state’s top award.
The award recognizes exemplary personnel who work with one or more campuses in technology planning and curriculum integration. It was created to recognize the significant contributions these individuals make toward the successful use of technology on their campuses.
“I love being an Instructional Technology Specialist for TISD because it allows me to combine my passion for teaching with my love for instructional technology,” shared Kirkland. “In my role, I am able to research new technologies that aid in streamlining instructional delivery for teachers and which allows students to become more actively engaged in their learning environment. Technology levels the playing field for all students. Everybody has a different learning style and with technology we can meet each child’s learning style and then watch them blossom as they succeed.”
“Being a techie person just means that you are willing to explore the process to figure it out, and yes, even learn from your kids. I always tell teachers that YOU are the masters of the content but the STUDENTS are the masters of the technology.”
Kirkland has been with the TISD Tiger Family for 11 years serving as a Kindergarten Teacher, Media Specialist, Gifted & Talented Teacher and Special Education Teacher for Theron Jones Early Literacy Center. Since 2008, she has taught the Summer Robotics Camp and beginning in 2009, she became the lead teacher and sponsor for the Texas Middle School extracurricular Robotics program. Kirkland holds a Bachelors of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies from Texas A&M University – Texarkana. She is a Mimio Certified Trainer, Mimio Master and is TCEA certified as a Robotics Facilitator and Technology Specialist.
“Shannon has a passion for ensuring that every teacher has the training and support they need to equip students for a 21st century world,” commented Ronda Jameson, Director of STEM Education for TISD. “She works tirelessly to support teachers with innovative and engaging activities delivered through effective technology tools. Her dedication to technology integration and customization of trainings that meet the needs of each individual’s particular technology toolbox has made her professional development sessions popular and caused students to flock to robotic programming that she leads.”
