Bowie-Cass Adult Education Cooperative Celebrates National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week

Texarkana, TX – Bowie-Cass Adult Education Cooperative, in partnership with the National Coalition for Literacy (NCL), invites you to celebrate National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, September 22-26, 2014. To recognize the national celebration of adult education and family literacy programs and the achievements of adult literacy students, a special celebration will be held at the TISD Academic Learning Center, 3201 Lincoln Avenue, on September 26 at 10:00 a.m.

For the sixth consecutive year, National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week has been declared by an act of the U.S. Congress.

Bowie-Cass Adult Education Cooperative is supported by federal and state grants from the Texas Education Agency. TISD is the fiscal agent for the Cooperative. The Cooperative serves approximately 500 students per year at eight sites in the Bowie-Cass area.

Adult education and family literacy programs serve adult students who need to improve their basic literacy and math skills, improve their oral and written English, obtain a high school equivalence degree and prepare for community college or vocational training. According to the latest national survey of adults, more than 93 million American adults have Basic or Below Basic literacy skills that limit their ability to advance at work and in education, help their children with school work, take care of their family’s health and participate in their communities.

Family literacy programs serve parents and their young children, teaching basic skills, English as a Second Language, and parenting skills to adults while their children are provided high quality instruction. These programs are focused on breaking the cycles of low literacy, low education and poverty.

The media can celebrate National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week by publishing student success stories and profiles, and literacy facts to raise the awareness of the general population.
