August Regular Session for TISD Board of Trustees Includes Kudos and Approvals for Tax Rate, Student & Employee Handbooks and Teacher Appraiser List

Texarkana, TX – Kudos and congratulations abound during the August regular session of the Texarkana Independent School District’s Board of Trustees.

The room outfitted in orange, white and gold balloons along with “sweet treat” baskets for the Board members, supported the Superintendent’s Report as he congratulated the seven volunteer board members for being named one of 16 regional nominees for Texas Association of School Administrators (TASA) 2015 Outstanding School Board Award.

“We are beyond thrilled that the members of our TISD Board of Trustees have been selected as one of sixteen regional nominees from a field of 1,031 school districts,” shared Paul Norton, Superintendent of Schools. “Together, these individuals have 46 years of service to the children of TISD. Their leadership exemplifies dedication to meeting the needs of a diverse student population; courage to be innovative in maximizing resources; and an insatiable desire to continue moving the district forward.”

Criteria considered for selection was based on the school board’s support for educational performance, support for educational improvement projects, commitment to a code of ethics and maintenance of harmonious and supportive relationships among board members.

TASA’s School Board Awards Committee will meet in late August to select up to five of the nominated boards to be recognized as Honor Boards. Those finalists will be interviewed at the TASA/TASB Convention in Austin on October 2-4 with one being named Outstanding School Board of the Year.

In other business, Board members approved the adoption of the tax rate and certified values for 2015-16. With the approval of the November bond election, the tax rate will remain at $1.17 for Maintenance & Operations (M&O) and move up .086Ȼ to $.255 for Interest & Sinking Funds (I&S) which is used to repay bonded indebtedness and other debts. Certified appraised values for TISD from the Bowie Central Appraisal District remain flat at $1,904,258,396.

Additional items approved included: the 2015-16 Employee Handbook, Student Code of Conduct & Handbook and Professional Development & Appraisal System (PDAS) Appraiser List.
