Discussions on Budget, Policies, Elections & Attendance Zone on Agenda for February TISD Board of Trustees Meeting
Texarkana, TX – Discussions on 2016-17 school year budget, wellness & health services policy, joint election agreement for May and new elementary school attendance zone was on the agenda for the February 16, 2016 regular session of the Texarkana Independent School District Board of Trustees.
Deidra Reeves, Chief Financial Officer, shared with Trustees that staff has been working on the 2016-17 budget estimates since January. “We will now have the campuses and departments prepare their budgets and have them presented to the Cabinet by early April.” A First Reading of the Budget to the Board of Trustees will be during the April regular session with final budget approval during the June 28 meeting.
Amendment to the Local Policy FFA on Student Welfare, Wellness and Health Services was approved as part of the Consent Agenda. The revised amendment is tailored after the Texas Association of School Board guidelines and with the approval of the TISD School Health Advisory Council (SHAC). Changes include the addition of four goals under the Wellness Plan and three goals added under Physical Activity. The TISD SHAC Committee is comprised of 40 members who meet quarterly. Members include parents, students, teachers and community members who address any and all changes associated with wellness within the school curriculum.
Board members also approved a Joint Election Agreement between TISD and the City of Wake Village for the May 7, 2016 Trustee election. “Election Code 11.0581 allows school districts to have a joint election with a “municipality,” said Paul Norton, Superintendent of Schools. “Through this partnership with the City of Wake Village, the requirement of the election code is fulfilled.”
In a final action for the night, Trustees approved the attendance zone for the New Elementary School, located on 15 acres off Gibson Lane near the southwest corner of the Encore Waggoner Creek Apartment Homes.
Two community meetings were held in January on the rezoning of elementary campuses in order to gather community input. The final recommendation for approval sets the attendance zone as all property within the boundaries of TISD that are located north of Interstate 30.
Registration for enrollment at the new elementary school will begin April 1. The campus is slated for an August 2016 opening.
