January 2018 TISD Board of Trustees Meeting Covers Variety of Topics

Texarkana, TX – The January 23, 2018 regular meeting of the TISD Board of Trustees covered a variety of topics from refrigerated trucks to 2018-19 tuition rate and much more.

Trustees approved the purchase of two new refrigerated trucks for the TISD Child Nutrition department at a cost of $227,612. The bid was awarded to MHC. Current trucks in operation are at least 12 years of age and have reached a point of unreliability and constant repair. These trucks will be moved into the Maintenance department for local usage and deliveries. TISD Child Nutrition not only serves the schools within Texarkana ISD but also serves as food service manager for many other area school districts – Bloomburg ISD, DeKalb ISD, Linden-Kildare CISD, Malta ISD, McLeod ISD, New Boston ISD and Redwater ISD.

In an effort to move forward with the development of the 2018-19 school calendar, Trustees approved the TEA Expedited Waiver for Staff Development. Effective this upcoming school year, TEA will offer a new Staff Development Minutes Waiver that provides for a maximum of 2,100 total waiver minutes to use for professional development. Districts must have their waivers approved by TEA prior to adopting their 2018-19 school calendars.

In other business, Trustees approved the order calling for a Trustee Election on May 5, 2018. Incumbents Bill Kimbro, representing District 1, and Paul Miller, representing District 6 At-Large, will both seek re-election for their respective positions.

Additionally, Board of Trustees approved a tuition rate of $5,359 for ineligible students effective the 2018-19 school year. TISD establishes a tuition fee on an annual basis for students seeking enrollment that are ineligible for state funding. The annual rate is set according to the estimated Adjusted Basic Allotment the district expects to receive from the state.

Lastly, authorization was given to the TISD Administration to begin exploring district/campus projects that could be funded through maintenance tax note financing. Full presentation of projects is expected to be made at the February 2018 regular session of the TISD Board of Trustees.
