TISD Considers Elementary Realignment for 2013-14 School Year

Texarkana, TX – During their Tuesday, February 19, 2013 regular session, Texarkana Independent School District Board of Trustees were updated on an elementary realignment and attendance zone change for the 2013-14 school year.

Superintendent Paul Norton presented highlights of the potential change that would affect the Dunbar Intermediate Center, Theron Jones Early Literacy Center and Westlawn Elementary School campuses.

At present, grades 3-5 attend Dunbar Intermediate, Pre-K–2 attend Theron Jones ELC and Pre-K–5 attend Westlawn Elementary. With the proposed change, the Dunbar, Theron Jones and Westlawn attendance zones would be combined. Dunbar Intermediate would become an Early Education campus for Pre-K students, Theron Jones would become a K-2 campus and all students, in grades 3-5, would attend Westlawn Elementary.

“Our leadership team has reviewed the realignment scenario fully and have discussed the potential changes with each campus principal, staff and various community members,” shared Norton. “We have not finalized our plans as of yet but wanted to take the opportunity to present the proposal to our Board of Trustees. From here, we will visit with parents/guardians of students in the involved campuses by hosting a series of Parent Meetings in mid-March. It is our hope that they will embrace the changes and see the positive impact we feel that exists through the realignment.”

Changes in program placement for the TISD/TAMU-T Professional Development School, now housed at Westlawn Elementary, and the Innovative Connections Academy STEM program, currently at Dunbar Intermediate, have not yet been determined. Those decisions will be made as TISD officials work through the details of the realignment, confer with staff and parents/guardians.

In other business, Trustees approved the 2013-14 tuition rate for ineligible students to remain the same as it has been during the last three years. TISD establishes a tuition fee each year for students seeking enrollment that are ineligible for state funding. The annual rate is set according to the estimated Adjusted Basic Allotment the district expects to receive from the state. TISD’s tuition rate for ineligible students for the 2013-14 school year will be $4,968.
