February 2020 Texarkana ISD Board of Trustees Meeting Addresses Budget Calendar, School Calendar and TMS Course Guide

Texarkana, TX – Texarkana Independent School District Board of Trustees reviewed and/or approved the following items during their February 18, 2020 regular session.

*Consideration/Approval of Proposals. Approved Windstream for Internet Access Services for the period July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2023 at $4,716 per month. This expenditure will be filed through the E-rate program with anticipation of 80% reimbursement of the expense. Also approved Quill as a School Supply Vendor for the period January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2024;

*Consideration/Approval of FY 2020-2021 Budget Calendar. Surveys and needs assessments for the coming school year have been reviewed since December 2019. Campuses and departments will prepare and present their budget requests by end of March. TISD will hold first budget reading on April 21 with public hearing on budget, proposed tax rate and final budget approval on June 30;

*Consideration/Approval of 2020-2021 District Calendar. First day of school for students will be August 19, 2020 with the last day of school on May 26, 2021. TISD will release the newly approved calendar via their website, social media pages and parent/guardian email during the upcoming week;

*Consideration/Approval of Texas Middle School Program of Studies and Course Description Guide for 2020-2021. One (1) new course will be added for the 2020-21 school year – Outdoor Adventures. SWAT Robotics course for 8th grade students will move from an elective credit to a technology credit. Texas Middle School offers 152 courses for students with 36 Pre-AP courses available;

*Consideration/Approval of TEA General Waiver for Course Review Process. Texas Education Code 30A.105(a)(2) requires all courses made available through the Texas Virtual School Network (TXVSN) be reviewed and approved prior to being offered. Eligible school district may apply to the commissioner of education for a waiver from the TXVSN course review process that is administered by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). The TISD eSchool Prep is seeking this waiver and by doing so, assures TEA that the District will review each course offered to determine that each course meets all TXVSN standards and requirements for electronic courses;

*Consideration/Approval of Designation of Backup Submitter for TEA TEASE/TEAL System. Approved Amanda Manca, Director of Student Services to act as superintendent designee/alternate for approving staff requests for access to one or more TEA web applications accessed through the Texas Education Agency Secure Environment (TEASE) or TEA Login (TEAL);

*Consideration/Approval of Joint Election Agreement. Approved between TISD and the City of Wake Village for the May 2, 2020 Trustee election. Trustees running for re-election are Amy Bowers – District 4, Gerald Brooks – District 2 and Fred Norton, Jr. – District 7-At Large.

The next meeting for the TISD Board of Trustees will be Tuesday, March 24, 2020.
