TISD Appoints Gerald Brooks to Fill Unexpired Term for District 2
Texarkana, TX – During their Tuesday, January 15, 2012 regular session, Texarkana Independent School District Board of Trustees unanimously appointed Gerald Brooks to fill the unexpired term of Dr. James S. Grant for District 2. Following his appointment, Brooks was immediately sworn in to begin his service.
Dr. Grant passed away on November 17, 2012. He was elected to the TISD Board of Trustees in 1995 to fill the unexpired term of Alvin McCray. Grant served as Board Vice President from 2004 – 2008, President from 2008 – 2010 and was the TISD Board Chaplain since 2010. TISD accepted letters of interest for the position from December 10 – 21. Mr. Brooks’ appointment will run until an election is held in May 2013 to fill the remainder of the unexpired term which goes through 2014.

I have no doubt that Mr. Brooks will bring a wealth of knowledge and wisdom to our team of eight and greatly appreciate his willingness to be considered.”
Brooks is a retired Teacher and Assistant Principal for TISD. He began his career in education in 1963 and retired in 2002. Following retirement, he returned to TISD to serve as the Assistant Principal for Westlawn Elementary School from 2004 - 05. Brooks also served as an Adjunct Professor for Texarkana College from 1970 – 1990 teaching Black History and U.S. History.
He has been active in the Texarkana community as former Chairman of the Board and current Board of Director of TEXAR Federal Credit Union for 20+ years. During his involvement with TEXAR, he has seen the institution’s assets grow from $2 million to $275 million.
Additionally, he has served as Basileus member of the Theta Upsilon Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, member of Phi Delta Kappa International Education Fraternity, Board of Director of the local chapter for the Texas Historical Foundation and Trustee Board Member for Oak Street Baptist Church.
Brooks is an active member of the Texas Retired Teachers Association, serving as Treasurer for the local affiliate and on the Finance Committee at the state level. He is a Life Member of Texas State Teachers Association, National Congress of Parents and Teachers and maintains membership in the Texas Association of Secondary School Principals.
Brooks is married to the former Ruthie James and they have three children, Angela Bunn, Yolanda Evans and Grallin Brooks along with nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
