Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the land for TISD's new Engineering & Mathematics Elementary School?
Located within the TISD Zone in North Texarkana on University Drive and McKnight Road.

How did TISD acquire the land for the development of a new Engineering & Mathematics Elementary School?
A donation of land by Waggoner Creek Crossing II, a Texarkana based land holding partnership, was made to the Texarkana Public Schools Foundation. Their donation reflects the continued growth of the Texarkana community and the need for state-of-the-art schools in our city. The land gift to the foundation renders the property available for use by the school district.

Why an elementary school?
TISD is keeping with the priorities of the Blue Ribbon Committee which was composed of 75 community members who met throughout 2004-2005. One of the first priorities set by the committee was a new elementary campus. The development of a new Engineering & Mathematics elementary school campus will help maintain the momentum of the TAMU-T School of Engineering and downward expansion.

How many students will the school enroll?
It will serve an estimated 400 students in grades K through 5.

Why a new school North of I-30?
The TISD Blue Ribbon Committee set as a priority the development of a campus north of I-30 due to the projected growth in Texarkana. Currently, TISD elementary schools are at/or near capacity with less than 75 seats available on seven (7) campuses in grades K through 5.

When would the new elementary school be expected to open?
August 2007.

Will this be a magnet school?
No attendance zones will be assigned to this elementary campus in keeping with TISD policy of open enrollment and parental choice. The new elementary school will have direct ties to the TAMU-T School of Engineering with unique instructional opportunities specifically in the areas of math, science and technology.

How much acreage in TISD's boundaries are North of I-30?
Approximately 30%.

How do I enroll my child?
Beginning April 15, 2006, applications and pre-applications will be accepted in the TISD Administrative Offices.

Where will these enrolled children go after attending the Engineering & Mathematics elementary? Texas Middle and Texas High schools will provide course options supporting a continued development of engineering and mathematics preparation leading to TAMU-T.
