Texas Education Code 37.222 Safe Gun Storage
As required by Texas Education Code §37.222, the Texas School Safety Center (TxSSC), in collaboration with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), provides school districts and open-enrollment charter schools with information and resources regarding the safe storage of firearms. These resources include information about Texas Penal Code §46.13 and ways parents and guardians can help prevent children from accessing firearms.
Texas school districts and open-enrollment charter schools are required to provide this information and these resources to the parent or guardian of each enrolled student at least three times each school year.
Safe firearm storage is an important part of keeping children and our community safe. Firearms should be stored unloaded and secured in a safe or locked container, with ammunition safely secured.
Please review the attached safe firearm storage resources from the Texas Department of Public Safety. These materials provide information about safe firearm storage options, talking with children and others about firearm safety, and steps families can take to help prevent unauthorized access to firearms.
Additional information and resources are available through the Texas Department of Public Safety's Keep 'Em Safe, Texas! safe gun storage initiative.
